Throughout 2024, Paperboats have campaigned alongside Global Justice Now Scotland for the First Minister to back the call for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty on behalf of Scotland.
On November 14th, before the start of COP29, we joined with GJNS, Stop Climate Chaos Scotland, Christian Aid, Protest in Harmony, Parents for Future Scotland, The North Sea Knitters, Uplift other organisations to hand in a petition to John Swinney First Minister asking the Scottish Government to back a Fossil Fuel Treaty for Scotland.
This treaty is a practical global initiative to ensure a fast and fair transition away from fossil fuels. Parliamentarians, individuals, and organisations from all over the world have signed it. Global Justice Now has been leading the campaign in Scotland.
Several members of the Scottish Parliament came out to support the petition hand-in and paperboats were included in the invitation to meet First Minister John Swinney to discuss the treaty. Mr Swinney assured us that he would look seriously at the treaty. Backing this call on behalf of Scotland would be a positive step forward for the Scottish Parliament in terms of progressing Scotland’s just transition away from oil and gas. Both Edinburgh and Glasgow city councils have now backed this important treaty.
Join Global Justice Now Scotland in keeping up the pressure on the Scottish Government and Scotland’s local councils to back the Fossil Fuel Treaty.
